Introduction / History

The Congo Nyoro Hema are a Bantu people in Ituri Province, eastern DRC, historically known as South Hema. They trace their origins to pastoralist ancestors who migrated from the Great Lakes region and speak the Hema language, part of the Nyoro-Ganda family. Colonial history and local dynamics have shaped their identity and relationships with neighboring groups.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Hema live in rural villages where cattle herding and small-scale farming provide sustenance. Families are close-knit, with elders respected and communal cooperation common in daily work. Typical Congolese foods such as fufu (from cassava or plantains), stews, fish, and occasional meat are shared in family meals, and dancing and music enliven celebrations like weddings, harvests, or church festivals.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The majority identify as Christians, many within Roman Catholic and Protestant traditions, and Christian practices are woven into life and festivities. While indigenous beliefs once shaped worldviews, today formal church attendance and Christian prayer are central among many Hema communities.

What Are Their Needs?

The Hema long for deeper discipleship and mature Christian communities rooted in scripture that reflect Christ's love in every sphere of life. They also desire peaceful coexistence with neighbors after years of tension and conflict in the region. Access to holistic care, education, and stable livelihoods would strengthen families and affirm human dignity amid ongoing social challenges.

Prayer Items

Pray that Hema believers will grow in love for Christ and be effective ambassadors of reconciliation among all ethnic groups in Central Africa.
Pray for encouragement and protection for pastors and church leaders as they disciple their communities.
Pray that many disciples will make more disciples.
Pray for physical provision, peaceful relations with neighbors, and opportunities for economic stability, education, and health for Hema families.
